Sivananda Yoga

yoga bromley

All our yoga classes follow the Sivananda Yoga Class Sequence a Classical Sequence of Hatha Yoga Postures (Asanas), Relaxation, and Breathing Exercises (Pranayama) originating from India and practiced by yogis and spiritual seekers throughout the ages.

The sequence can sometimes be adapted to be in harmony with the different seasons, weather etc. For example, when it is cold we do more of a dynamic practise and with more cooling, camling techniques when it is warmer.

The Sivananda Yoga Class Sequence can be practiced strenuously providing a dynamic physical workout or very gently and slowly creating deep calm and stillness. With Sivananda yoga we give our minds and souls as much of a cleanse and a workout as we do our bodies.

To establish a calm mental attitude and inner focus the classes always begin with a tradtional peace chant in Sanskrit, a relaxation, and deep breathing exercises (Pranayama).

After establishing this inward focus we move into a sequence of flowing warm-up movements called the Sun Salutations (Surya Namaska), followed by leg stretches and core strength leg lifts.

Having thoroughly warmed up we move into the main body of the class with a sequence of 12 powerful yoga postures (Asanas). As you advance in your practice dynamic and fun variations of the 12 postures are introduced.

The classes always close with a longer guided deep-relaxation to allow the benefits of the practice to be fully metabolised, and to encourage further stress-release and healing.

Benefits:

When practiced regularly, the specific Sivananda Classical Hatha Yoga Postures, Relaxation and Breathing can help you to develop on many levels, improving strength, balance, flexibility, concentration, confidence, as well as general health and well-being.

In a typical class we begin with about 15 minutes of Pranayama or breathing exercises.

All yoga practices originate from the spiritual texts of India and were developed as a tool to help the yoga practitioner attain a state of enlightenment - an experience of union or deep peace with oneself and all of humanity.

Somatic Yoga

yoga bromley

Somatic yoga is a very gentle and mindful movement practice specifically working on creating freedom and ease of movement in the spine, hips and major joints of the body. It is a soft, mindful practice of repetitive gentle movements that unblocks patterns of deep stress, tension and trauma in the body which allows for easy, pain free movement.

It is like meditation in movement and is specifically good also if you find traditional yoga too challenging and would like a gentler class.

It is an online class, so can easily be practised in the comfort of your own home. Class price is £14 a drop-in or you can book a term which works out at £12 a session and if your are short of funds at the moment, any donation is fine.

Please contact us for the zoom link to join. If you cannot make it in person, we can send you a class recording

Restorative Yin

yoga bromley

Sundays are a perfect time for a Yin practice as Yin wisely teaches us how to slow down, to let go and relax and enter into the deeper layers of our being. Yin yoga is a slow and deeply releasing, meditative practice that targets the deep connective tissues, bones, joints and ligaments in the body. The slow, mindful and gentle practice is especially helpful in reducing stress and anxiety by calming and relaxing the mind. It is a nice contrast to our regular Sivananda hatha yoga classes that we practise.

In these sessions we will start with a short Yang more dynamic/active practice of Surya Namaskar ( Sun Salutes ) to warm us up. This will be followed by some calming, restorative breathing exercises that will lead us nicely into our slow Yin session. During the session, as we hold poses for longer periods of time, we will have the sharing of some short inspiring readings for reflection and absorption to nourish us inwardly. We will then end the session with an in depth final relaxation and with some moments of sitting in silence together, which is always easier after a Yin practice, as silence and stillness is encouraged the whole way through.

For the practice you will need to have with you some cushions and blankets, that we may use as support in some poses. It would be good to have a yoga belt also, or something like this, which you can easily buy for a few pounds online. If you have an eye pillow that is nice also, especially for the long relaxation at the end.

This class runs once a month on a Sunday from 8-9.30/40am.

Upcoming Dates:

  • 6th September
